Law and Gender: The Interplay Between the Private Sector and the Judiciary in Advancing Women's Economic Participation

April 2, 2023

The event will focus on the interplay between the private sector and the judiciary and other stakeholders in legal systems in advancing women’s economic participation. Countries cannot move forward if half their population is held back by laws that create barriers. Equal treatment of women under the law is necessary for dynamic, inclusive, green and resilient economies.

In line with the World Bank Group's (WBG) Gender Strategy, this conference will focus on ways to promote legal reforms, adapt public policy, enhance judicial interventions and strengthen corporate practices that advance women’s economic participation and equity. Through discussions amongst government representatives, policy makers, members of the judiciary and private sector stakeholders, the endeavor is to (i) raise awareness about the existing de jure and de facto legal barriers for women’s economic participation; (ii) share experiences, best practices, ideas and solutions to deal with these challenges to achieve gender equity; (iii) leverage learnings from countries in MENA who initiated significant judicial reform and from companies that have already set out an ambitious diversity, equity and inclusion agenda.

Panelists will bring their unique experience to topics that range from the role of the judiciary in accelerating gender equality through for example labor reforms to creating a level playing field for female entrepreneurs and their access to finance, and tackling gender-based violence.

Panelists include Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Professor Rangita De Silva as well as other eminent leaders (public and private) from the region including the UAE and Jordan.

We hope to see you there and count on you sharing your insights!
